Pokemon GO has just announced the biggest new update to the game by revealing their Gym rework plans for the game.

It will change virtually everything you think you know about the existing gyms, which will disabled in the coming hours as Niantic prepare to roll out these new features over the coming hours.

There’s also plenty of new info about a whole new feature for the game in the form of Gym raids. These will resemble the raids seen in the original trailer with legendary Pokemon Mewtwo, ut for the time being Niantic looks to be focussing on boss battles with high CP Pokemon, rather than legendaries.

Original Story

The Pokemon GO Fire and Ice event is now live, but as previously mentioned by Niantic, there are some exciting changes ahead.

Writing on their blog last week, Niantic said: “Get ready to explore the world around you—there are even more exciting updates coming your way soon”

Previously the developer had told fans they would be “temporarily disabling Gyms for a short period of time”.

The intention was so that the team can prepare “a new update focused on collaborative group gameplay features that will get you playing Pokémon GO in fun new ways.”

And now fans know exactly when these big gym changes are likely to take place, with a new message on the official Niantic support site confirming that the Gym shutdown will be happening very soon.

“Heads Up: Gyms will soon be closing temporarily for remodelling.

“Any Pokémon you’ve assigned to Gyms will be returned to you at that time.”

In reaching out to Niantic for more information on the concrete timing of this change, Pokemon GO Hub discovered that it’s likely taking place in the PM for UK players.

“I don’t have an exact time. There’s a lot of moving pieces to this process so it would be hard to promise any timeframe. But I can say that it will likely happen within West Coast, USA business hours.” a Niantic support staff told the Reddit Silph Road.

Meanwhile, the new Fire and Ice event, which is live now, will continue for a few more days at least, with increased spawns of certain Pokemon and additional XP bonuses for trainers with good throws.

The Pokemon GO Fire and Ice Event will run until June 20, at 1PM PDT, which again, is 9PM for us trainers playing the game in UK.

Though not officially listed by Niantic, we expect the following Pokemon to see increased encounter rates in the game:

FIRE: Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard, Vulpix, Ninetails, Growlithe, Arcanine, Ponyta, Rapidash, Magmar, Flareon, Cyndaquil, Quilava, Typhlosion, Slugma, Magcargo, Houndoor and Houndoom.

ICE: Seel, Dewgong, Shelder, Cloyster, Jynx, Lapras, Sneasel, Swinub and Piloswine.

It’s worth noting that Seel and Shelder are not Ice type Pokemon. BUT, as we spotted during the recent Rock event, which should only have seen an increase in spawns of Magcargo, we also saw increased spawns for Slugma, so we expect the same system to take place here.

In addition to the increased spawns, there’s also a unique new XP bonus mechanic.

For the duration of the event, there will also be increased XP for players who are able to throw curveballs, Nice Throws, Great Throws and Excellent Throws.

Which is bad news for anyone using a Pokemon GO Plus, but great news for anyone who prefers to catch everything they can.

The other big event to keep an eye on this coming Monday is Pokemon GO Fest Chicago, which will officially start selling tickets at PokemonGoLive.com/Fest on Monday, June 19 at 10:00 A.M. PDT

Little it known about the event for now, but the hope is that Niantic explains more with the release of these upcoming gym changes.

In addition, further Pokemon Go events have been teased by Niantic but for players in Europe.

“European Trainers can look forward to Pokémon GO celebrations hosted across the continent from June through September in partnership with Unibail-Rodamco shopping centres. We’ll be posting a complete schedule for these events very soon.

“Also, The Pokémon Company is organizing “Pikachu Outbreak”, a Pokémon event in Yokohama, Japan, in August where they’re exploring a unique Pokémon GO experience. Stay tuned for even more details surrounding each of these events in the coming weeks.”

Over the last week, Niantic shared more details on these European celebrations, which are set to take place in France, Germany, Spain, Denmark and Sweden near Unibail-Rodamco shopping centres.
